Iranian Barberry (Barberries)The latest product Arat Co is investing in producing, is Iranian Barberries. Companies who are producers of Muesli, Fruit Bar, Fruit Mixes and Fruit Tea as for infusion purposes. 

 

General information:

Iran’s annual production: Approximately 7,000 tons

Southern Khorasan province has largest amount of Barberries production with 6642 Hectares of Barberries gardens and 98.7% of Iran’s total production.

In average each Hectare of Barberries produces 1380 Kg dried Barberry.

Exportation figure: Small section of whole production is being exported mainly for Iranian communities abroad. Approximately 100 Tons per year.

Generally Barberry product is natural product and it is rarely being fertilized with chemical fertilizers or fumigants.

Previously this product was cultivated by dry farming. However, in years of drought the plants are being irrigated manually. In general, the plant just needs a normal recision during the year.

Barberries on Shrub 

The harvesting time is end of September till mid October. Considering the drying process length, the new crop will be in Market by March and April.

 


 

Processing & Drying Methods:

Traditional Method:

o Traditionally, Barberries are being spread on the ground (just like Grapes) to get dried. In this method the berries stick to each other and the product will contain various extraneous materials especially small stones. This product doesn’t have the puffy texture.

Puffy Type Drying:

o In order to produce the puffy type of Barberries, the branches of the plant is being cut off with the fruit on it and then it will be places on wooden bars in a place with continues air stream from 4 sides. The drying process normally takes 4 to 5 months.

o After the Barberries are dried they are being separated from the branches by a machine and then passed through a vacuum machine to remove foreign objects.

Sundried Type Drying:

o In order to produce the sundried type of Barberries, the fruits are tekn off of the branches and placed unde direct sunlight to dry. The drying process normally takes 4  weeks.
